Local Independent Business Counter Proposal to $15Now – Forward Seattle
Forward Seattle has a proposal for Mayor Ed Murray and the Seattle City Council. It’s time to change the conversation from $15Now to discussing a real solution that increases Seattle’s minimum wage.
Forward Seattle is a non-partisan, self-funded, grassroots organization providing a unified voice to independent businesses in direct response to $15Now and Seattle’s minimum wage debate. Most members choose to pay rates above the minimum wage. Forward Seattle advocates an increase in the minimum wage that is gradual, sustainable, responsible and measurable.
Forward Seattle Proposes:
-$11.00 as of 1.1.2015 for SBA-defined small business adjusted annually through 2017
-Wages include: tips, bonuses, commissions and profit-sharing
-State minimum wage retained for tipped/commission workers, adjusted annually by COLA
-Phase-in for non-profits
-No exceptions made for collective bargaining agreements or unions
-Training wages, including a rate for workers under 18 years of age
Forward Seattle believes that big business can absorb an increase to $12.50 effective 1.1.2015.
Finally, policy adopted must be measured, evaluated and reported upon for actual impact on low-wage earners prior to adopting new policy beyond 2017.
Forward Seattle believes that an increase in the minimum wage is a matter of justice, solvency, sustainability and survival, not just for the Seattle local independent business community, but for the citizens involved in them and the public at large.
